It has been several decades since the LRGV experienced a major Category 4 or 5 hurricane. This presentation, timed early in the hurricane season, will discuss the return period or frequency of hurricane strikes for the LRGV area as compared to other areas along the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic coastline. Many are surprised to see that our region is among the lowest strike frequencies (largest return periods) for Tropical Storms of any type (TS and Hurricanes of Cat 1-5).
Our presenter, Dr. Jude A. Benavides is an environmental scientist and engineer with a focus area in hydrology and Geographic Information Systems. He has over 20 years academic experience and holds the rank of associate professor of environmental science and hydrology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
